INFORMATION
Benefits
Outdoor activities continue to grow in popularity as governments and other bodies
market outdoor activity participation, particularly walking and cycling, for its general
health benefits.
Existing solutions for the outdoors market rely on expensive dedicated GPS receiver
devices (such as Garmin and Magellan units). ViewRanger offers the same
tracklogging and navigation functionality as these units but with additional
advantages including:
•
Full colour topographic mapping
•
3D panoramic viewpoint maps
•
Over-the-air library of guided walking and cycling routes
•
Integration with the smartphone camera
•
Utilisation of mobile network data services to access information and share
experiences of the landscape (e.g. Map Download, Buddy Beacon,
TravelLog, Facebook integration, etc.)
•
The consumer only needs to carry a single device – and they already carry
their mobile phone
•
Longer battery life of the phone handset against PDAs.
•
Can run alongside vehicle satnav software on the same smartphone device.
Market
ViewRanger runs on the most popular smartphone handsets
in the market. Nokia are integrating GPS into many of their
handsets and is actively promoting the GPS capabilities of
its devices.
Samsung (now worldwide #2 in the mobile market) have
released ten S60 handsets, five of which include integrated
GPS.
2009 has seen Nokia, Samsung, SonyEricsson, and LG
announce further S60 handsets with integrated GPS
receivers.
Augmentra is working on ViewRanger for iPhone and
Android platforms.
