Each year we lose fellow backpackers and outdoors men and women to mishaps in the wilderness. These folks will always be remembered by loved ones and friends as the adventurers that they were.  They will be respected for reaching for heights, going the distance and giving it their all!

My oldest son has backpacked for several years now and has walked more miles in the backcountry, climbed more peaks and traversed more alpine ridges than I have.  (He nearly died rolling down a 140 metre – snow to scree – 45 degree angle slope on his return trip from sumiting Mount Siwhe. One of several pre trip activities that he does very well is getting terrain maps for the area he is hiking in. Recently he shared a link with me that anyone hiking or backpacking in Canada should probably be visiting.

On his last trip to summit Mount Severide, a crew of French Backpackers who seemed to be avid hikers did not have maps for the area. They thought their destination was about 20 km away when they met my son but he informed them that it was much much closer. Can you imagine how lost they could have been? Jesse was done with his maps so he gave them his.

Mt. Severide Trek in the Monashee Alpine

Fall Season = Hiking Season! While I was working Saturday and enjoying the local regional parks on Sunday, Jesse and crew were out bagging Alpine Peaks. Below are Mount Severide pictures and pictures from the hike up. Jesse doesn’t use a GPS, he downloaded and studied all the map sheets from Google and took them with him. Good thing, a french hiking crew who were otherwise quite prepared for the backcountry, did not have proper maps to get the correct information to Twin Lakes, lucky for them Jesse had been there several years ago so told them how to get there and gave him the printed map sheets as well (he was on his way back)!

Jesse’s trip report on another Monashee trip has a link to the Trail Head map and a track on Google maps of some of the area.

FlyFish Lake # 1 Free Camping and flyfishing

FlyFish Lake # 1 Free Camping and flyfishing recreation site has 3 campsites and you can go to the site & enjoy marvelous camping, attractive hiking, fantastic fishing.

This is a beautiful small lily pad lined lake halfway between Kelowna and Lumby. This walk-in lake is only a couple hundred meters from the main fsr. At the road there are two tent sites with fire pits and at the lake there is a small clearing with a large fire pit. Dead wood is plentiful. Bring bug spray and your fly rod!

General directions: If coming from Kelowna Follow Beaver Lake Rd from Windfield. Take the first major right after Dee lake and drive for only a few km before finding the 2 sites and the sign “Fly Fish Lake #1 Rec Site.” Roughly 45mins from Kelowna.

While we were there the area seemed to be a rich with flora and fauna. We caught leeches and fished for the fish we saw jumping. We seemed to be competing with two loons and a large eagle who also seemed to be fishing. Relaxing by the shore was pleasant as mint was growing wild along the water.

See FlyFish # 2 post  (has map you can zoom in to see the lake as well)
