I really appreciate hikers and backpackers sending back the completed email interviews that I have emailed out to specific hikers. Some interviews have been longer and others short and all the participants have freely shared their hard learned lessons that provide excellent outdoor wisdom for all of us to use if we choose. One of the most mentioned nuggets of outdoor wisdom is to backpack lite or – light. I will let BC hiker Mandy Polson explain further.
How and where were you introduced to the outdoors?
At a very young age camping with my parents at Forest Service sites in B.C.
What has been your favourite hiking / biking or outdoor area?
The Rockies and Coast Mountains.
Have you ever been lost in the wilderness? If so please describe this adventure and any lessons learned. For small amount of times. Lesson learned would be to look behind you occasional while ascending.
If not previously mentioned, have you ever completed a thru-hike or multi-day backpacking trip and what nuggets of wisdom did you glean from it?
The West Coast Trail was the Longest I’ve done.
Wisdom…spend the money and go with light equipment. Always bring lots of spare socks.
