Chay Johnson is a true outdoor enthusiast. There is no trail obstacle that will stop him and his hiking buddies, actually there doesn’t have to be a trail! I had coffee with Chay after he wrote a few comments on TracksAndTrails.ca and found that he also makes his own knifes and most any survival tool one would use in the Backcountry.
Chay’s interview will leave you laughing, his other posts can be found by clicking Bushiologist on the Rangers page…
How and where were you introduced to the outdoors?
I was young, I have pictures of me with my grandparents camping at the tender age of 10 months. lol
What has been your favourite hiking trail or outdoor area?
I couldn’t say, there is too many. but a good rule of thumb for my own personal outdoor enjoyment is the farther from civilization and people the more fun I have.
Please share an outdoor story related to one of the above areas.
Yesterday I went hiking with a friend and we found 5 full brewskis sitting in the bush…. 3 buds and 2 bud light limes!!!! woot made the return trip so much sweeter!
Have you ever been lost in the wilderness? If so please describe this adventure and any lessons learned.
I have not had the pleasure of getting lost, although I have tried on numerous occasions. I think I would enjoy being lost. I have a really good sense of direction its hard to get lost with all the constant reminders of your bearing, i.e. the sun, the stars, flowing rivers and creeks. If any of your viewers have any tips on getting lost please pass them along and I will see if it works for me. Although, I did recently go hiking with a buddy ( one that probably shouldn’t have come) and he got lost I spent two hours searching for him…. I found him don’t worry!
Can you share any unique encounters with wild animals?
Last week had the pleasure of viewing a pair of golden eagles hunting in a canyon. Seen a ghost bear and her cub a number of years ago. And most unique of all seen what appeared to be a forest toucan. Can’t say what it was went to quick to snap a pic… but I swear it was a forest toucan!
If not previously mentioned, have you ever completed a thru-hike or multi-day backpacking trip and what nuggets of wisdom did you glean from it?
Yes quite a few of those hikes. Nuggets of wisdom??? uuhhhh well first off make sure your with people you can stand being around for the duration of your hike, nothing worse than a whiner or lazyass.
What is your favourite outdoor website?
Why this one of coarse!
What is your favourite outdoor hiking gear store?
The Internet. There is no store to match the versatility of the internet; I like my gear customized to my needs beyond the variety of goods available in town. But then again there really isn’t a need for a hiking store. All one needs is matches, water, a knife, and feet. I never understood the fancy fibreglass poles or the water purification tablets (isn’t that what fire is for??), plastic water bottles (how do u plan to boil water in plastic???, expensive gortex jackets n the such, usually made in china and no good for real BC hiking, sure it works if your an avid greenway hiker and never have to swath a path for yourself but no good in my line of hiking. bah I have no use for that stuff.
